Comparing a small TV crew to a Student crew

I have found some good videos on youtube about old documentary crews at TV companies like the BBC in the time when documentaries were still shot on 16mm. The crews for these documentaries had at least one thing in common with student crews and that was the fact that they were very small crews consisting of less than 10 people. The people  who made up these small crews however, had different roles to those on a student project. I decided to compare theses two different types of crew.

Crew members

Average student film crew at CCAD:

  1. Director
  2. Camera Person (Operator and Director of Photography)
  3. Sound Recordist
  4. Producer
  5. Editor

Crew on 16mm TV documentary crew:

  1. Director
  2. Camera Person (Operator and Director of Photography, although I'm not sure what they were credited as, or if there was perhaps another senior person responsible for the cinematography who wasn't part of the location crew. There may have been different camera operators on different parts of the)
  3. Camera Assistant
  4. Gaffer
  5. Sound Recordist
  6. Production Assistant
