More Cell Tests

Test shots for the Cell

For this shot I was testing lighting the subject and the set behind him using mainly light reflected from reflectors. This was to imitate the way that a room would be lit if it was lit by sunlight coming in through the windows. The shot features the subject under a table, as he is in a part of the script. Due to how dull the raw footage is from the Black Magic, it is very difficult to fully see the colours  in the lighting, as the file still needs to be colour corrected. Therefore the raw footage does not properly represent the test.

How it was lit
This shot uses 3 sources of light and two reflectors. One source of light is a red head with blue gel that is placed behind the window of the set, located to the subjects left (our right). This red head by itself does not cast much light around the Cell and, without reflectors, would only illuminate the wall on the subject's right (our left). In order to light the background and give the subject some backlight a reflector was used. This hopefully means that the light illuminating the set is soft and even as it would be in reality if sunlight was the main source.

The next light source comes from a red head, to the left of camera which is shone over the top of the camera straight onto a reflector in front of the subject, slightly to the right of the camera. This reflected light is what is lighting his face.

The third source of light is intended to be a little bit more expressionistic and comes in the form of a 60 watt bulb inside a paper coffee cup with heat proof resin on the inside. This is shone straight at his face from the left of the shot and is intended to give his face some warmth. This was used with the intention of adding to the dramatic element of the character within the story, as I am intending to make him stand out slightly from the environment of the Cell. This light is barely noticible in this uncorrected raw footage, but, if graded will give a subtle golden glow to the subject.
